In this modern age, having a website for your business, and even to a lesser extent, your personal musings is important, but did you know that creating a website, or having a website created for you isn't the end of it?
Having a website, but neglecting it can sometimes do more harm than good, today we'll take a look at a couple of reasons why.
For starters, when you first launch a website, all of the content on your website, whether that be information on your products and services or blog posts about particular subjects, will be relevant and up-to date.
If you've not updated your website's content in some time, then it's possible it's showcasing services you no longer offer, or prices that have long since changed. Worse yet, if you have a blog and offer guides, they may be outdated and offer advice which is incorrect, depending on your industry/topic this could be anything from inconvenient, to dangerous for your readers!
Not only that, but if a visitor comes to your website looking for information and sees that it was posted a long time ago, they may feel that it is no longer relevant and leave your website.
Whilst this one can be debated, we find that Google and other search engines such as Bing love relevant content, and if your website is being actively maintained, it's more likely that your content will be relevant and not stagnating. Not only that, if you're posting regular blog posts about current topics, which are helpful and attract users, then you're likely to appear higher in the SERPS compared to a website that has outdated, old content. (in theory!)
If you have a website that sells a product or service, a user is more likely to purchase from you if your website is kept up-to-date. Put yourself in your visitor's shoes, if you visited a website that looked like it hadn't been updated in several months, or even years, would you be happy to part with your hard earned cash and feel confident that the website would deliver the product or service you purchased from?
Even if you don't have a blog, having current user created reviews on your website can help to keep it fresh, if you have reviews from the past month or 2, chances are, your website can still be trusted - if your last review was posted a year ago then it's not quite as appealing!
This is perhaps one of the most important reasons to maintain your website regularly, a website which is not secure is dangerous not only for your brand but also for your website's visitors.
If your website is hacked, it may display incorrect information, or attempt to deceive your visitors, or even worse, it may attempt to steal your users' information, or install malicious software on their device, if this happens it will be very hard to regain the trust of those users.
To ensure this doesn't happen, it's important that you perform regular maintenance on your website.
